Chæ ba caáp baäc ñaàu seõ ñöôïc trình baøy vaén taét nôi ñaây, vì ôû caáp baäc thöù tö thì chaúng coøn gì ñeå luyeän nöõa.
In today's world, the year of 2004, meditation has been used by many people in the temples, churches, schools, prisons, etc. in the way of relieving stress or to treat mental illnesses. The main purpose, however, is helping people to escape the reincarnation-cycle.
Based on one of the Cao-Dai bibles, the Great Book of Truth-Teaching ( Dai Thua Chon Giao ), Rev. C.T.V.A.L. (Chieu Tien Vo Anh Lao) has laid out the simple method of meditation, which was published at the end of 2001 in a booklet named, "To Break The Labyrinth Of Meditation" ( Pha Me Thien ). In this summary, the theories behind each step of the practice will not be discussed.
This simple method of meditation contains four levels: (1) to transform the essential substances in the human body into divine energy ( Luyen Tinh Hoa Khi ), (2) to transform the divine energy into the spiritual body ( Luyen Khi Hoa Than ), (3) to transform the spiritual body into the holy being ( Luyen Than Huon Hu ), and (4) to unify the holy being with the Supreme Being ( Luyen Hu Huon Vo ). Only the first three levels are described in the following paragraphs since we have nothing new to do in the fourth level.
       (1). Luyeän Tinh Hoùa Khí:
       (a) Chuaån Bò:

       - Cöû aên tröôùc boán giôø. Uoáng nöôùc khoâng sao.
       - Choïn moät trong caùc tö theá ngoài nhö döôùi ñaây. Tö theá ngoài treân gheá laø deã chòu nhöùt. Tay phaûi ñeå leân tay traùi roài gaùc nheï leân ñuøi. Hai ngoùn caùi chaïm kheõ vaøo nhau. Ñaàu vaø löng thaúng, khoâng nghieâng beân traùi beân phaûi, khoâng ngaû tröôùc ngaû sau.
(1). To transform the essential substances in the human body into divine energy:
       (a). Preparation:

       - About four hours before the session, do not eat anything. Drinking water is okay.
       - Choose below one of the ways of sitting. The most comfortable way is sitting in a chair. Put the right hand on the top of the left hand, and then lay them in your lap. Gently touch your thumbs together, end-to-end. The back and the head are in a straight, upright posture, no bending forward or reclining.

       - Quay maët veà phöông Baéc, maét nhaém laïi nhöng höôùng veà aán ñöôøng (giöõa hai chaân maøy).
       - Mieäng ngaäm nheï, raêng keà raêng, ñaàu löôõi cong leân chaïm noùc voïng.
       - After facing to the north, close the eyes; but focus at the center of the eyebrows.
       - Place the tip of the tongue at the roof of the mouth. Then close the mouth. The upper and lower teeth should touch gently with one another.

       (b). Phaùp Luaân Vaän Chuyeån:
       - Hít vaøo töø töø khoâng ngöng nghæ cho ñaày buïng roài ñaày ngöïc.
       - Thôû ra cuõng töø töø khoâng ngöng nghæ cho xeïp buïng roài xeïp ngöïc.
Laøm nhö vaäy khoaûng 5-10 phuùt.
       (b). Pre-Meditation:
       - Inhale slowly and firmly to expand the abdomen, and then fill air into the lungs.
       - Then, exhale slowly and firmly to empty the abdomen and the lungs.
This session lasts about 5-10 minutes.

Vieäc thieàn ñònh coù keát quaû hay khoâng tuøy thuoäc vaøo ba ñieàu kieän: (1) söï boá hoùa cuûa Ôn Treân, (2) caên cô vaø tieàn nghieäp cuûa mình, vaø (3) söï taïo ñöôïc taâm khoâng trong luùc ngoài thieàn. Phöông phaùp taïo taâm khoâng deã nhöùt laø ñoïc khaåu khuyeát , töùc laø noùi thaàm trong ñaàu . Haõy töôûng töôïng nhö yù mình ñang daãn hôi thôû (taâm töùc nöông nhau). Thí duï:
       - Khi hít vaøo, noùi thaàm raèng: "Ñöa khí chôn döông leân aán ñöôøng."
       - Khi thôû ra, noùi thaàm raèng: "Ñöa khí chôn döông voøng qua Ñôn ñieàn, theo xöông soáng, ñi leân ñænh ñaàu."
Trong khoâng khí chuùng ta ñang thôû coù khí chôn döông voán chöa ñöôïc khaùm phaù bôûi caùc nhaø khoa hoïc. Chính khí chôn döông naøy ñaõ nuoâi döôõng Thaùnh Thai daàn daø lôùn leân trôû thaønh Chôn Thaàn vaäy.
The result from the meditation is dependent on three needed conditions: (1) the blessing from the Supreme Being, (2) the contribution of "cause and effect" in previous lives, and (3) the emptiness of the mind during the meditation. The easiest way to create the emptiness of the mind is to talk to yourself in silence ( Khau Khuyet ). In your imagination, tell your mind to direct the flow of your breath (mind and breath come along together). For example:
       - In the inhaling-cycle, just say in your head: "Bring the pure air to the center of the eyebrows."
       - In the exhaling-cycle, just say in your head: "Send the pure air to the abdomen, through the spine, and to the summit of the head."
In the regular air we breathe, we believe that there is pure air, which is not yet discovered by scientists. This kind of pure air is used by the spiritual fetus ( Thanh Thai ) and later on the spiritual body ( Chon Than ).
       (c). Meditation:
       - Return to normal breathing, not as slow and deep as in the warm-up session.
       - Switch between eyes and ears after talking with yourself a few times. Continue talk to yourself in silence to create the emptiness of the mind. For example:
       * In the eyes-cycle, just say: " Focus the eyes to the center of the eyebrows to see (the light of your soul in your brain is about one inch behind the center of the eyebrows)."
       * In the ears-cycle, just say: " Focus the ears to the summit of the head to hear (the sound of nature, from the Supreme-Being)."
Just ignore what you see or hear.
The following figure depicts the flow of the eyes-cycle and ears-cycle during the meditation session, which lasts about 25-30 minutes for the beginner and about 45-60 minutes or more as needed later (the longer the better).

       (d). Xaû Thieàn:
Töø töø môû maét ra vaø quay veà traïng thaùi bình thöôøng. Roài:
       - Chaø hai tay vaø vuoát leân soáng muõi ñoä 3 laàn cho aám.
       (d). Relaxation:
Gradually open your eyes and return to the normal condition. Then:
       - Rub your hands together and apply the heat to your nose about 3 times.

       - Chaø hai tay vaø aùp söùc noùng leân ñaàu 3 laàn. Keùo traùi tai 3 laàn.        - Rub your hands together and apply the heat to your head about 3 times. Pull your ear-tips 3 times.

       - Boùp caùnh tay cho thö giaõn, traùi roài phaûi.        - Massage your arms, left then right.

- Boùp chön töø ñuøi xuoáng ngoùn, traùi roài phaûi. Chaø xaùt hai baøn chön. - Massage your legs, left then right. And also, rub your feet.

Xaû thieàn luoân luoân aùp duïng sau buoåi ngoài thieàn, keå caû luyeän ôû caùc caáp baäc cao.
       (e). AÁn Chöùng:
       - Luùc môùi taäp:
       * Baïn coù theå thaáy moät ñieåm saùng nhoû trong oùc, hoaëc laø moät tia saùng.
       * Baïn coù theå nghe nhöõng aâm thanh laï trong oùc nhö tieáng deá hoaëc tieáng ve.
       - Laâu daàn:
       * Baïn seõ caûm thaáy hieän töôïng khí tuï trong loøng baøn tay, loøng baøn chön raàn raàn, aám aám. Sau ñoù khí löïc naøy seõ saên ruùt, chaïy ngöôïc veà thaân theo hai tay, hai chaân vaø ñöôïc goïi laø doøng Khí Löu . Ñoàng thôøi, baïn cuõng seõ caûm thaáy coù luoàng gioù nheï phaûng phaát treân moû aùc.
Trong khoaûng töø 3-6 thaùng, neáu baïn khoâng coù nhöõng caûm nhaän naøy thì raát coù theå baïn ñaõ thöïc haønh sai laïc, hoaëc coù theå vì caên cô tieàn nghieäp neân caàn phaûi coù theâm thôøi gian, moät naêm hay nhieàu naêm.
The relaxation session is always performed at the end in all three levels of meditation.
       (e). Proof of Result:
       - In the beginning:
       * You may see a tiny point of light in your brain or a beam of light.
       * You may hear some sounds in your brain, like the sound of the cricket or cicada.
       - Later on:
       * You may feel that the divine energy concentrates at the center of your hands and the bottom of your feet. Then there is some holy force from your heart that tries to withdraw this divine energy to your body through your arms and legs ( Khi Luu ). At the same time, the air blows lightly on the top of the fontanelle.
If you do not have these "feelings" in 3-6 months, you may not be doing it correctly, or you may need more time, a year or more depending on the contribution of "cause and effect" in the previous lives.
       (2). Luyeän Khí Hoùa Thaàn:
Döïa vaøo quyeån Phaù Meâ Thieàn, ñöôïc bieát sau vaøi naêm thieàn ñònh ôû caáp moät, hoaëc cho ñeán khi baïn nghe ñöôïc hai aâm thanh traàm, töø oùc vaø töø tim, baïn coù theå böôùc qua giai ñoaïn hai. Baáy giôø baïn khoâng coøn söû duïng chieác gheá thöôøng nöõa, maø laø chieác gheá naèm nghieâng nhö gheá xeáp.
(2). To transform the divine energy into the spiritual body:
Based on the boolet "To Break The Labyrinth Of Meditation," after a few years of practicing level one, or until you hear two low-frequency sounds from the top of the head and the base of the heart, you can enter level two. At this time, you nolonger use a regular chair, but a Lazy-boy chair or a lawn chair.

Nhö vaäy coù nghóa laø baïn khoâng coøn ngoài nöõa, maø laø nöûa ngoài nöûa naèm (vôùi ñoä nghieâng 45 ñoä luùc môùi taäp). Vaø baïn tieáp tuïc laøm nhöõng ñoäng taùc y nhö ngoài thieàn.
Tuy nhieân, aán chöùng trong giai ñoaïn naøy raát khaùc. Khí löïc seõ taäp trung vaø chaïy voøng voøng ôû buïng döôùi, goïi laø hieän töôïng Ñaïo Chuyeån . Sau nhieàu naêm luyeän taäp, voøng khí löïc naøy coù theå hoaëc khoâng theå di chuyeån töø buïng döôùi ( Haï Ñôn Ñieàn ) leân ngöïc ( Trung Ñôn Ñieàn ) roài leân ñaàu, ñænh ñaàu ( Thöôïng Ñôn Ñieàn ).
Taùc giaû hieän ñang haønh thieàn ôû caáp böïc moät neân khoâng coù kinh nghieäm gì ôû caáp hai naøy. Seõ vieát theâm khi naøo tôùi ñoù.
That means you no longer sit, but you do a half sitting and a half lying down position (45 degree inclined from the beginning). And you continue to do the same steps as described in level one.
However, the proof of result is different. The divine energy is formed in your abdomen as a wheel of force ( Dao Chuyen ). Through years of practice, and depending on your previous lives, this wheel of force may or may not gradually move up from the abdomen ( Ha Don Dien ) to the chest ( Trung Don Dien ) and then the head ( Thuong Don Dien ), especially at the summit.
Because I (the author) am only in level one, I don't have any experience in this level. I will write more in detail when I reach that far.
(3). To transform the spiritual body into the holy being:
In general, based on the above booklet, when the wheel of force exists in the head, you can use your mind to order the spiritual body ( Chon Than , already formed in your body) to leave the flesh. Then the spiritual body (your purified soul in the same form as you are) can separate from your body to become a holy being, same as angel, deity, saint, fairy, buddha, etc. and can go anywhere by the order of your mind. Returning to the human body is in the same way: by ordering of your mind.
At this level, you must become 100% vegetarian. But you can drink milk and eat cheese, eggs (without the embryo inside).
       (4). Luyeän Hö Höôøn Voâ:
ÔÛ caáp baäc naøy thì chaúng coøn gì ñeå luyeän (nhö Thöôïng Ñeá ñaõ ñích thaân chæ daïy trong moät ñaøn cô). Tieáp tuïc tu taäp nhöõng gì ôû caáp böïc ba. Coù leõ, theo thieån yù cuûa toâi, chöa coù vò Cao Ñaøi treân quaû Ñòa Caàu naøy ñang luyeän Höôøn Voâ caû.
(4). To unify the holy being with the Supreme Being:
There is nothing else new to do at this level (as has been taught directly by the Supreme Being in one of the medium session). Continue to do whatever you do at level three. Perhaps, with my knowledge, there is no one on Earth, as a CaoDaist, at this level yet.
